As the days draw in and we say goodbye to summer, what’s better than turning to a glass of red, enjoying some comfort food or getting lost in a good book. We’ve put together a selection of red wines that will ensure you have something suitable for every occasion, whether you’re making the most of a surprise warm day in the garden or searching for the accompaniment to an Autumn feast.
In putting together this pack we wanted to give the option of enjoying some lesser known local wines and some international wines from the old world, so you can compare and contrast while expanding your wine knowledge if you wish.
From Central Otago we have a Dicey Gamay that offers up blackcurrants and spice on the nose and is lively on the palate. You can serve this a little chilled like a Beaujolais if you like and it’s versatile enough that you can even pair it with seafood or lighter meats like chicken or pork dishes. If you’re a fan of light, fun and fruity Pinot - make sure you try Gamay.
Sticking to the region, we have an Akarua Pinot Rouge, the 2022 is the second release of this wine and it has been designed to show off the fruity and juicy nouveau style of Pinot Noir. This wine offers fun and delight at room temperature but will drink deliciously when chilled down to around 12c.
We couldn’t resist putting the Nor’Wester in this pack - as our Canterbury summer wraps up there have been some warm days ushered in by the Nor’westerly winds that give this wine its’ name. This is a vibrant and fruity wine that leans to red cherry and spice with very fine tannins. We think this wine is quite an underrated second wine, but it’s still small-batch ferment and gets a full 10-month French oak programme. Great value!
As our days get shorter, the springtime begins over on the other side of the globe - we bring you 3 wines from France and Spain. The Albert Bichot ''Mr No Sulfite'' has a fruity palate with blueberry flavours. The Ferraton Vin de France “La Tournee” is a dense and powerful red blend of Grenache and Syrah, but with silky tannins coming at the finish to balance the palate.
Finally, our Spanish pick is an old ‘bush vine’ Grenache (Garnacha in Spain) from Calatayud between Valencia and Bilbao and it offers aromas of Cherry, Plums and Red fruit. From high-altityde vineyards on slate and gravel soils, this is a round, full-bodied wine and is delicious drinking right now.
Here is a selection of wines previously featured in the box.
Please keep in mind availability and vintage may vary, but typically you can expect to receive wines of equivalent or greater value and quality if we have to substitute any of these due to availability.
