Chenin Blanc has been grown in the Loire Valley for centuries, possibly over a thousand years. François Rabelais, a French Renaissance writer from Touraine, mentioned the grape in his works, calling it both Chenin and its local synonym Pineau. Other names for it included Anjou, Plant d’Anjou, Gros Pineau, Pineau d’Anjou, and Pineau de la Loire. The name "Chenin" likely comes from the Montchenin monastery, where it spread across the Touraine region and then back to Anjou.

While Chenin Blanc's roots are in the Loire, where it has a variety of classic expressions, it has also thrived in South Africa. Here, you can find some of the oldest vines, which are dry-farmed and bush-trained.

Chenin Blanc is also grown in California’s Central Valley (mostly for inexpensive wines from high-yield vineyards), as well as in Australia, New Zealand, and South America.

In New Zealand, Chenin Blanc is grown in several wine regions, where it benefits from the country's cool climate and diverse terroirs. Known for producing crisp, refreshing wines with bright acidity and flavors of green apple, citrus, and sometimes a hint of honey, New Zealand Chenin Blanc often showcases a unique balance of fruit and mineral notes. While not as widely planted as in the Loire Valley or South Africa, New Zealand's Chenin Blanc is gaining recognition for its quality and distinct regional character.
